Russian Poker: Rules and How to Win at It

Poker is a broad term for various card games. It encompasses Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Seven-card Stud, Badugi, and Draw Poker. Occasionally, it includes local versions of casino games, such as Russian Poker. Let's discuss it in more detail.

What is Russian Poker

Russian Poker is a type of card game. It combines elements of blackjack and five-card draw poker. The aim of the game is to beat the dealer's hand.

Russian poker is played against the croupier

There is no competition against other players at the table. There is also no board with community cards. Russian poker is included in the list of casino gambling games. It is not placed alongside Texas Hold'em or Omaha. For example, Pokerdom has placed Russian poker in the Casino tab, not in sections with regular card games.

Russian Poker is played with a deck of 52 cards. Jokers are not used in the game. In rare cases, a 36-card deck is used, which changes the rules. A short deck speeds up the game and changes the odds of getting combinations. Russian Poker is not a standalone casino game but a variation of Caribbean poker. In Russian poker, you can exchange cards or buy a sixth denomination. Additional rewards are paid for strong combinations. There are no betting streets or bluffing opportunities in Russian Poker.

How to play Russian Poker

There are no unified rules for Russian poker. The specific casino sets the conditions of the game. Up to 3 people, not counting the dealer, play at a Russian Poker table. The positions are called boxes. One player can occupy all 3 places and participate in the round against the same dealer's hand.

Before the deal begins, players and the dealer place an ante. The size is determined by a placard on a casino table. Online, the betting limits are indicated when the game starts. Each player and the dealer are dealt 5 cards. These are hidden from other participants. One card in the dealer's hand is visible to all. The other 4 cards are face down. Based on their hand and the dealer's revealed card, a player can:

  • Fold. The poker player leaves the round and loses the ante.

  • Exchange cards. Between 1 and 5 cards can be exchanged. To exchange, an ante must be paid. If the player pays for a card and receives the same denomination of a different suit, the dealer will replace the new card for free.

  • Buy a sixth card. Paying another ante allows for an extra card.

If a player opts to stay in the game and wants to reach a showdown, they must pay double the ante. After the player's bet, the dealer reveals their final hand. If the dealer's hand is weaker, the poker player wins the round. If the hands are equal, all the money carries over to the next round. If the dealer wins, they take the player's money.

The player's decisions during the round affect their final winnings. Card exchange and purchase reduce the player's return from the round. Russian poker also has a special qualifying rule for the dealer's hand. With a combination worse than AKxxx, the dealer declares 'no play.' The player receives their ante back at a 1:1 ratio and retrieves their bet. When the dealer lacks a qualifying hand, the player may buy the dealer an additional card for an ante. If the new card strengthens the dealer, the hands are compared using standard rules.

The player's combination affects the payout size. A win with one pair will pay 1:1. A Four of a Kind earns a more generous 20:1. These are the multipliers in Russian Poker:

Combination

Payout

AKxxx or 1 Pair

1 : 1

2 Pairs

2 : 1

Three of a Kind

3 : 1

Straight

4 : 1

Flush

5 : 1

Full House

7 : 1

Four of a Kind

20 : 1

Straight Flush

50 : 1

Royal Flush

100 : 1

What is insurance. With a straight or better, a player can take insurance. It protects the poker player if the dealer fails to qualify. If the casino representative does not have even an AKxxx at showdown, the player only receives the ante instead of the increased payout for the straight. Features of insurance:

  • taken before the final hands are revealed;

  • costs 50% to 100% of the ante;

  • if the dealer has a hand of AKxxx or better — the insurance is forfeited.

It is beneficial to take insurance when a player has a premium hand, such as a Four of a Kind or Royal Flush. However, over time it will increase losses rather than profits.

How to win in Russian Poker

You cannot read your opponent’s hand and make a clever call or pull off a bluff in Russian Poker.

The same hand ranking rules apply in Russian Poker as in Hold'em or Omaha

The casino representative plays according to a set pattern, leaving the player minimal room for manoeuvre. To improve your chances against the house, you should:

  • Avoid paid options. Do not spend your ante exchanging cards with a weak starting hand. Invest in combinations such as two pairs or a straight draw. If the right card comes, the higher reward will offset the additional ante. It’s not worth buying a sixth card after a failed exchange. Exception: situations involving a draw to a straight flush or royal flush.

  • Enter the round with good hands. All players pay an ante before the start of the deal. It's more sensible to discard a poor hand and wait for a more promising combination than to invest money in exchange. The same approach applies as in Texas Hold'em, Omaha, or seven-card stud. Junk hands will bring more losses than profits.

  • Consider the dealer's revealed card. If the casino representative shows a king or ace, their chance of qualifying increases. We recommend against taking insurance.

While playing Russian poker, remember psychological balance. In Russian Poker, it is harder to tilt because there is no competition with other opponents. However, a streak of losses can be frustrating. Keep emotions in check so as not to give money away to the casino.

Where to play Russian Poker online

Russian Poker is not classified among popular card games. Most platforms do not feature Russian Poker. Similar games like Oasis Poker or Caribbean Poker take its place. The rules of Caribbean Poker are similar to Russian, but there’s no card exchange stage for an extra fee. You also can’t buy a sixth card. You can play Oasis Poker for money at Pokerdom and RedStar Casino. The game is placed in the Casino tab. On RedStar, Oasis Poker can be found under the category Table Games.

Find the game in the 'Casino' section

Some platforms allow you to play Russian Poker for free. They may not have flashy designs, but they provide an opportunity to learn the rules and get acquainted with the game. There are also several apps for mobile devices offering Russian poker.

Why Hold'em is better than Russian Poker

In Russian Poker, the player competes against the casino. In the long run, Russian Poker generates revenue only for the establishment. The rules and mechanics of the game do not leave room for a profit. Casinos also offer No Limit Texas Hold'em tables. However, in NL Hold'em, a player competes against other players, not the establishment. The organiser earns commission from each pot — the identity of the hand's winner does not matter. If a poker player demonstrates a high level of skill, they can take money from opponents. Other advantages of Texas Hold'em include:

  • Prizes. The World Series of Poker champion receives not only a coveted bracelet but also several million dollars. For example, in 2025 Michael Mizrachi was paid $10,000,000. No tournaments for Russian Poker are held, making No Limit Hold'em far ahead. Payouts in Russian Poker at best can be compared to a successful mid-stakes cash session.

  • Interest. NL Hold'em is an unpredictable game with enormous variability. The same hand can be played in dozens of ways. Opponent actions create thousands of unique situations. The first decision at the table can be an all-in, or you can participate in all betting rounds and end the hand at showdown. Notably, there's the chance to reveal an opponent with a weak hand or execute a crazy bluff.

  • Learning opportunities. To reach the highest levels in Texas Hold'em, thousands of hours of study are required. The game offers a wealth of topics for exploration: preflop ranges, 3-bet pots, barreling, blind battles. In Hold'em, there is always potential for growth. In Russian poker, learning is limited to basic recommendations, memorising winning combinations, and payouts.

Russian Poker is a game with negative expected value. A good poker player and a poor one are distinguished by the speed of losing money. In NL Hold'em, a strong player will show a profit in the long run.

How to learn to play real poker

A wide selection of educational materials is one of the main arguments in favour of Texas Hold'em. Improving poker skill is helped by: books, video courses, training software, hand analysis with other players, professional streams, and coaching sessions. Let's discuss each method separately.

Books. Beginners have access to hundreds of books. Not all books are equally helpful. For instance, Doyle Brunson's groundbreaking 'Super/System' for its time will not be very useful now. Poker has moved forward, and the ten-time WSOP champion's advice will not win you games in 2026. However, there are true gems among the printed works. These include 'The Mathematics of Poker' by Roy Rounder and 'The Mental Game of Poker' by Jared Tendler. The first introduces basic poker mathematics, the second key psychological concepts.

Our YouTube channel provides analyses of tournament victories, interviews with popular players, and poker software reviews

Video courses. The internet offers thousands of poker study videos. You can find suitable material on any topic within minutes. Language barriers aren’t an issue: modern browsers competently translate videos by foreign authors. Training materials are also released by FunFarm — subscribe so you don’t miss anything.

Software. One of the most effective learning methods is analysing mistakes using special programs. Working with solvers, poker calculators, and push-fold trainers helps to identify and correct most strategic gaps. Read more about useful poker software in our article.

Analyzing hands with colleagues. Fellow poker players can help spot errors in your game. Players often create themed chats to discuss their own and others' hands. A colleague might identify a hidden flaw or suggest an alternative line of play.

Watching streams. Many professionals broadcast their play on platforms such as Twitch and Kick. They comment on their actions and respond to chat questions. Any viewer can freely ask for advice from an experienced player. FunFarm coaches also play live. Tune into the broadcasts to gain experience.

Working with a coach. A qualified mentor will analyse a player’s database, highlight thinking errors, and create a tailored development plan. Often sessions with a coach allow for a quick climb through the low limits and stepping up to the next level. Choosing a coach raises several questions:

  • how to evaluate their skills;

  • whether their style suits the student;

  • how much the course costs.

Finding a good coach is challenging for experienced players. It is even harder for a beginner to make the right choice. If you don’t know where to start, we recommend taking the free FF Start course. In it, not only do we provide the basics of theory, but we also secure it with practice.

FAQ

How does Russian Poker differ from Texas Hold'em?

Russian Poker is played against the casino. It does not involve competing with other players, betting rounds, or communal cards on the board. The aim is to assemble a higher-ranked hand than the dealer. In Texas Hold'em, you outplay other players through skill.

How can you increase your chances of winning in Russian Poker?

Do not invest in weak starting hands, use paid options sparingly, and consider the dealer’s exposed card. Avoid purchasing insurance, as it heightens losses.

Why can't you earn consistently with Russian Poker?

Russian Poker is a game with negative expected value: the payout rules are inherently designed for the casino’s profit. There is no room to showcase skill.

What is qualification?

If the dealer fails to form at least a minimum qualifying hand from 5 cards, he has not qualified. The game rules stipulate that the dealer cannot proceed to showdown with a combination lower than AKxxx. When the dealer lacks this, he announces “no game” and the player receives a minimal payout.
