WSOP scrapped shot clocks at the final table
The WSOP organizers have decided against using shot clocks at the final table of the 2026 Main Event. The decision was made after consultations with players and tournament staff.

Shot clocks first appeared at this tournament on Day 7 — after Lauren Klein spent more than 15 minutes tanking over a decision to reach the money. The move sparked a wave of criticism, and the WSOP, citing Section 80 of the official rules, urgently introduced a shot-clock system with time banks. It was in effect throughout Day 7 and Day 8.

Now the organizers are changing their approach.
"Our goal is to create the most natural playing environment possible, giving players time for the most important decisions of the tournament"
That said, the WSOP reserves the right to bring back shot clocks if repeated or excessive delays start to negatively affect the pace of play.

This decision, right before the start of the final, split the community into two camps.

Daniel Negreanu launched a poll among his followers without stating his own position. Shaun Deeb, on the other hand, came down hard on the organizers with criticism.
"If I were one step away from the final table, I'd be absolutely furious about this cancellation. Why did some players have to bust out under the intense pressure of a 20-second timer on Day 7 and Day 8, while the final nine suddenly get the right to sit and think over their cards for an eternity?"
Patrick Leonard also noted the oddness of the timing, but supported the cancellation itself.
"The timing of this decision really does look insane and chaotic, changing the rules midstream. But if you judge it on the merits — this is good news. At the final table of the Main Event, where millions of dollars and legacy are on the line, players shouldn't feel like they're in an online turbo tournament"
The 2026 Main Event final table will take place next week. Nine participants will play for the top prize without the pressure of a countdown clock, but under the close attention of the entire poker world.
