and a big purchase after winning the WSOP Main Event
World Series of Poker Main Event champion Lucas Jumalon was a guest on the Face the Ace podcast on PokerGO. In this interview, he shared that this victory and the $10 million he won haven't changed his character. The 22-year-old player noted that he doesn't plan to become a regular in high roller events, because he doesn't have a big enough ego for it.
"I don't think $10 million for winning the Main Event will change me or my goals. I never planned to grind high roller tournaments. I think that's for players with big egos. Maybe we'll see each other at Triton, but that's not the main goal for me. I'll travel around the series and enjoy the game, meet new people.
Of course, it'll be cool if I win something at Triton, but I'm focused on not letting the money change me. For that, you need to realize where to draw the line. The guys at the elite of poker are incredibly good, and I have a lot of work ahead of me to get into that circle. I'm ready to compete with them, but competing and winning are different things."
Jumalon also said that he would have found himself outside of poker too, since he gives himself fully to any endeavor. He compared his approach to an obsession. However, after winning the Main, Lucas wants to create a legacy in poker, and he named Daniel Negreanu as a role model.
"I always wanted to play poker, but I wouldn't have been lost if I hadn't won the Main. I try to stay humble, but I think I would be good at anything. I always give 110% at whatever I do, and I try to be good at it. When I think about legacy, Negreanu comes to mind. I'd like to follow his example in poker. It would be really cool to achieve even 10% of what he managed to."
In addition, Jumalon shared that he spent part of his winnings on a sports car. He noted that buying a new car was the only gift he gave himself to celebrate the victory.
"After winning the Main Event, I bought a blue 2023 Corvette Stingray LT3. Now everyone hears me when I pull up to the casino, especially when I hit the gas. It's slightly used. I was looking for something at a reasonable price, not a $150 thousand car straight off the lot. I paid $75 thousand, and I'm happy with it. I decided to treat myself that way. I haven't done or bought anything else like that."
