WSOP Main Event broadcast rating loses viewers

The first episode of the WSOP Main Event 2026 on ESPN2 drew 173,000 viewers in the first hour and 186,000 in the second. It aired on July 21 in prime time. These are the worst numbers in years, coinciding with the declining popularity of cable TV in the US.

The delay between the live action and the broadcast reached nearly three hours over the course of the series. This was due to sending the material to South Korea for post-production. Coverage on PokerNews and in the WSOP Live app was synced with the broadcast, which meant that the names of players at the table were anonymized until the segment aired.

The brunt of the criticism was taken by host Jeff Platt, who signed a contract with WSOP in January 2026. He publicly responded to complaints on social media. Viewers also complained about the lack of streams for mixed games and the confusing navigation on ESPN+.

Alexandra Botez compared the isolation of poker on paid platforms to the decline in boxing's cultural influence:

"Putting the greatest spectacle in any sport behind a paywall inevitably leads to a decline in its significance. 50 years ago, two billion people watched an Ali fight. Now the biggest bouts draw just over a million PPVs. Yes, top boxers earn more than ever, but the sport has lost the share of cultural influence it once had. Locking away the WSOP Main Event is short-sighted. In the future, I hope the final table is made available to everyone. This matters not only for the health of poker, but for the business itself."
