Gerard Piqué advances to Day 3 of the World Series

The World Series of Poker Main Event has drawn not only a massive field of professionals and amateurs but also a stellar line-up of celebrities. Among them is Spain's World Cup and European Championship-winning defender, Gerard Piqué.

During Day 2 of the event, Piqué clashed at the felt with four-time WSOP champion João Simão. The Brazilian pro shoved all-in with ♠️♣️, and after some deep tanking, the former Barcelona defender called the 75,500-chip bet with ♠️♣️.

On the turn ♥️♥️♣️♥️ Simão locked up two pair, and the river ♠️ brought no help for Piqué. The Brazilian secured the double-up, leaving the Spaniard with 134,000 in chips. Simão joked during the hand: "I was mad at him. I wanted to take a photo with him, and he took my chips. Can I take a photo with you now?"

Piqué bagged up 72 big blinds at the end of the day, sitting 640th out of 1,260 remaining players. The Main Event has attracted 8,389 entrants so far, with late registration still open.

Piqué's first recorded cash in a professional poker tournament dates back to 2011, when he locked up €40,950 for a third-place finish in the €5,000 Six Max Turbo at the European Poker Tour in Barcelona. The defender's career-best score came in 2019 at the EPT Barcelona, where he finished runner-up in the €25,000 No-Limit Hold'em for €352,950. Piqué's total live tournament earnings now stand at $738,611.
