Negreanu clinches eighth bracelet, defeating Martirosyan heads-up

Negreanu wins eighth bracelet, beating Martirosyan heads-up

Daniel Negreanu won the $100,000 High Roller Pot-Limit Omaha at the World Series of Poker. The Canadian pro claimed the eighth bracelet of his career, outlasting a field of 83 players and earning $2,257,718.

Negreanu botched the start of the final day, losing half his stack, but then managed to recover and even take the lead. Artur Martirosyan, who began 5-handed as the short stack, knocked out Yosuke Miki, Filipp Sternheimer and Chris Frank. As a result, the Russian held the chip lead going into the heads-up.

However, Negreanu quickly seized the initiative and closed out the win. In the decisive hand the Canadian flopped a straight, and the following streets no longer helped Martirosyan. The Russian failed to win his fifth bracelet but earned $1,477,434.
"Unfortunately, second place. Couldn't grab a second little bracelet this series. The heads-up was absolutely hopeless. I won a couple of hands at the start, but after that I lost pretty much every hand. I didn't hit a single flop, folded to c-bets everywhere, bluffed a couple of times and got looked up.
Still a great result, and considering I started as the shortest stack — outstanding overall. Of course, I would've liked to win a second bracelet. The opponent was very comfortable, probably the most comfortable one after the Japanese guy [Miki] who could have ended up heads-up. But you can't fight the deck," — Martirosyan commented on his defeat.

In an interview with PokerNews, Negreanu admitted he got lucky heads-up and noted the great atmosphere in the room amid the start of the WSOP Main Event:
"I got lucky heads-up, but I also played really well. He didn't see a couple of hands, but I'm telling you I won those with nothing at all.
It was awesome to win on the first day of the Main Event because of the atmosphere. The crowd was really into it. The rail was several rows deep."
