Poker high roller Persson's company is closing two of its casinos amid bankruptcy
Maverick Games, co-founded and led as CEO by well-known high-stakes cash player Erik Persson, has announced the closure of two casinos in the city of Tukwila, Washington. According to MyNorthwest, this will result in the layoff of 238 poker room employees. Cashiers, bartenders, dealers, cooks, and managers will be affected by the cuts.

The closures come amid bankruptcy proceedings that began back in 2024. Maverick Games is going through them under a special section of U.S. law that allows debt restructuring while continuing operations. When filing for bankruptcy, the company listed assets and liabilities ranging from $100 to $500 million.

As Bloomberg reports, Maverick's business was affected by the weakening economy in Washington state, while a wave of layoffs in the tech industry hit the gaming operator's customer base. In addition, the company suffered from high operating costs, including facility rentals. In July of this year, Maverick closed three more casinos in Washington state. The company now has around 20 poker rooms left.

Erik Persson is known for his participation in televised cash games, including High Stakes Poker and Hustler Casino Live. In 2022, he won a heads-up match against Phil Hellmuth, which was memorable for the mutual insults traded by the opponents. A year later, Persson lost a pot of nearly $2 million to Patrik Antonius on No Gamble, No Future.

According to Highroll Poker, Erik Persson has lost $6,072,950 over 204 hours in televised cash games. However, the high roller stopped appearing on streams after Maverick's bankruptcy announcement.
